Brown Windsor Soap was with Lewis & Clark during their 1804 exploration for the Northwest Passage. Napoleon and Queen Victoria adored the scent. It was made famous at the Great Exhibition of 1851, and used during the War Between the States. By the end of the Victorian era, just about every household in the country would have stocked Brown Windsor Soap. Originally, Brown Windsor Soap was made brown by the use of browned sugar. Later, natural dyes were employed to render that beloved hue. Our soap uses the natural colorants in the caraway seeds to color the bars Our Brown Windsor Savon de bain is from a 19th. C. French soap base. It is a fabulous formulation, especially from those of us that have dry skin. In fact, my sister will not use any other soap. |

Many soaps offered by small soap makers are 100% vegetable based. This is so that the soaps can be marketed to the vegetarians. However, a vegetable based soap is soft and does not hold up well when wet. They tend to leave more of a ‘mess’ in the soap dish and therefore do not last long. Our soaps, except for the Savon de Marseille, have animal-based oils. These oils are not only purified and highly refined, they are fit for human consumption. Vegetable oils are good, but tallow and lard make a better soap. Tallow makes a hard, white bar with stable lather. This means that the bar resists melting and its suds don’t break easily while bathing. Lard is probably the most wonderful fat for soap making. Not only does it produce a hard, white bar with lots of lather, it does not clog pores and is moisturizing and conditions the skin. All soaps have a money-back guarantee. Just use the small sample enclosed in your order. If it doesn’t suit your fancy, just return the unused larger bar. |
